I Never Had a 9–5 to Quit — And That’s Exactly Why It Worked

You know those coaches who post about how they were able to quit their 9–5 because their business became so successful and now they want to show you how to do it, too?

Of course you do — they’re everywhere.

And let me be clear—this isn’t a call-out post or a “they give me the ick” post, because those posts are the very definition of low frequency. In fact, I celebrate the fuck out of each and every single one of those coaches for making their dream come true and sharing what they learned with others, because in doing so they’ve chosen being a river over being a swamp.

I Never Had a 9–5 to Walk Away From

But me? I find it even more impressive — yeah, I’m biased — but more importantly, in greater alignment with how creation actually works, to say:

I never had a 9–5 to quit. I never gave it consideration, even as I was enrolled at CMU with a double major in pre-law and psychology. Never.

Once I knew my intuitive abilities were what I wanted to share with the world, there was no “backup plan.” No “safe route.” No Plan B.

I went to school, raised my son as a single mama, and built my business in the cracks between it all. I started at the bottom on reputable pad sites, honing my skills as a reader and learning new tools. I taught myself graphic design, built my first website, and went through a radical inner revolution. I unraveled poverty programming, toxic relationship patterns, and generational conditioning that was never mine to carry. I started seeing massive shifts—things were happening so fast it made me dizzy.

I realized this was what I needed to bring into the lives of other women.

Soon, intuitive readings alone weren’t enough. I wanted something bigger—something transformative that would empower women (my day-one goal) and blow the doors open on how they love, lead, and receive.

And that was 25, almost 26 years ago. Before life coaching or personal mentorship was the industry it is today.

Why It’s Impressive (and Aligned AF)

Why do I find this more impressive? Well… because it takes balls of fucking steel to do what everyone tells you is absolutely batshit crazy—and not just do it—but make it work.

But more than impressive, it’s aligned.

“Alignment” is one of those words that gets tossed around like confetti, but it’s essential. Me giving myself no other options—going all in without doubt—was my first lesson in how creation really works.

The Truth About Commitment

You have to hold the standard.
You must embody your commitment.
You have to go all in if you want to see your dreams manifest in front of your face.

You can’t half-ass it.
You can’t whisper to yourself, “I need options in case this doesn’t work,” because that’s already a split consciousness. That’s shaky energy, and shaky energy doesn’t magnetize.

Now, don’t get it twisted: I was in a unique position where I could make a solid living, support myself and my son, and go to college while building my business. Not everyone has that exact setup.

BUT—there are a million sneaky ways people cut off their own magnetism. And they almost always come down to three things: commitment, confidence, and alignment.

Commitment Isn’t Contingency Planning

You have to be committed to your core.

And yes, I know a lot of you are already shouting, “Duh, Laura, I am committed,” but about 99% of you? You’re committed-ish.

That looks like:

  • Making contingency plan after contingency plan for your dream’s eventual failure.

  • Grinding hard for a few weeks, then spending your free time doom-scrolling.

  • Building momentum and then abandoning it when it stops feeling convenient.

Commitment is consistent. It’s steady. It’s the daily, boring, unsexy work that stacks into something undeniable.

Confidence Isn’t “I Hope This Works”

If the best you can muster when someone calls your idea crazy is, “Well, if I don’t at least try, I’ll never know,” then what you’ve got isn’t confidence. That’s “maybe” energy. And “maybe” doesn’t manifest.

Confidence is a bone-deep knowing that what you want is yours. It’s believing in yourself enough to do the inner work required to become the woman who has it.

Of course I had moments of fear—panic, even. Single mama. Student loan debt looming. No safety net. But the work I did on myself—alone and with mentors—anchored me back into my power.

Fear is human. The key is to not pitch a tent there.

Alignment Isn’t Optional

When I first started this journey, I did have a job. Not a 9–5, but bartending. The moment I got approved to work on a reading site, I quit. I trusted myself. I believed in my work. I decided this was going to work.

And before anyone tries to mentally slip into the usual “But I need X before I can do that” excuses… let’s talk about it.

I didn’t have a cushy savings account or a financial parachute waiting to catch me. I had enough saved to maybe cover the essentials for a month — maybe. And honestly, looking back, it might have been less than that. I didn’t wait until the conditions were perfect. I made the conditions bend to me.

People love to romanticize the “I’ll go all in once I feel safe” narrative, but that’s not going all in — that’s hedging your bet. That’s telling the Universe you only half-believe in what you say you want.

Sounds crazy, right? It’s really not.

Because if you’re consistently choosing what’s out of alignment with your desire, you’ll keep your dream as a fantasy—not a lived reality.

If you say “yes” to what’s below your standard, you’re saying “no” to what’s meant for you.

Your choices must be in alignment with your long-term desire—not a dopamine rush in the moment—because the norepinephrine will wear off, and you will be no closer to the realization of your desire.

Alignment can look like:

• Ignoring 12 a.m. “U up?” texts because your energy is a temple, not a drive-thru.

• Creating a budget and building a fuck-you fund.

• Refusing to over-give so you can build something that actually feeds your soul.

Commitment. Confidence. Alignment.

These three aren’t buzzwords—they’re the holy trinity of becoming magnetic. When you hold your standard, back yourself fully, and align your actions with your desire… manifestation becomes inevitable.

The inner work is the glue. It’s what keeps the standard steady when life tries to shake it.

When you link your inner work to your outer power, you stop trying to manifest. You become the woman who always does.

You become the woman who makes the impossible, inevitable.

P.S. If this cracked something open for you, don’t stop here.
